neo-Luddite

“What is a neo-Luddite?”

The short answer is “Most of the folks in my email address book.”     Wikipedia says “neo-Luddite” is most often deployed by advocates of technology to describe persons or organizations that resist technological advances.

Mass production has put two very complex machines , Fords and PCs into the hands of idiots, What can I say?

Good old days

August 10, 2007 - One Response

I found this, written by my greatgrandfather in 1882, about life near Owatonna around 1860

“We had to take our wheat by ox cart sixty-five miles away. It took a whole week before we got home again, but at that time, that was all right, since it meant money.

Whoever had a hundred bushels of grain needed three weeks to get everything to market. How much easier it is today! Now we take our grain to market and return in one day”

If quitters never win, and winners never quit, who came up with, “Quit while you’re ahead”?

. Would a fly without wings be called a walk? (LOVE this one!!)

Atheism is a non-prophet organization

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, “Where’s the self-help section?” She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose

What if there were no hypothetical questions

Framing

August 6, 2007 - One Response

I did this post a few days before the bridge thing , it’s about framing ideas.
http://pegassus.wordpress.com/2007/07/27/framing/

Right now the media hangs on every word from any guy with a hard-hat and a pocket protector.
This will change as the blame game heats up. In this world, today, nothing just happens ; instead someone goofs. But we all get to pay …… stay tuned

Hindenberg crashed and burned

August 4, 2007 - Leave a Response

The Mtnneapolis bridge thing adds one more “I remember the day” story to my long list. The first one was when the Hindenberg crashed and burned, or did it burn and crash? I think they are still debating that one.
It happened 1n 1937 and was reported live by radio and then later by newspaper complete with black and white photos. This incident marked a big change in aircraft design, and likewise maybe our bridge will advance the science of crossing rivers

One Liners

Uncle Medford’s axiams

Medford stopped in today with a few farmer one liners. He just  escaped from from that gang of over-caffinated bloggers he had been running with.

Life ain’t about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.

Keep skunks and bankers and lawyers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

One nice thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people.

Crop failure

Fisher’s farmI was raised on a farm during the 1930’s and have sort of followed that activity ever since. Every few years we get some weather conditions that are not ideal for farming and the local media sends out their cub reporters to get a story.
They always find at least one young unlucky or inept young man with cute kids who will loose his farm, that has been in the family for 150 years if it don’t rain soon.
It usually rains and then they are off to cover the flood

FRAMING

July 27, 2007 - One Response

I have had a long time feud with the popular media about their caviler  handling of science, math, medicine, and other subjects not  covered  in writers school.
Many reporters think it is cute to not understand how simple, every day systems work, and that this is the norm.
This is called FRAMING, Framing develops a mindset that influences what you think about something.
Fortunately there are Bloggers out there who reframe these and other important subjects to help us get the best take. Most can be found on google.     try

Globle warming

deja vu  all over again
07/31/2006 A E F
Today we may hit 100 degrees F for the first time in a while. Some say we cannot do any thing about the weather, just talk about it. The funny thing is, we keep blaming each other for it. In the 30″s it was the lumber jacks and sod busters, and now it is the soccor moms and their SUVs. We live in an awkward time where some still believe evil spirits are in charge and others have total faith in a new and untested science. The only weather control plan left is the rain dance, and a wise old Indian said about that:”timing is everything”.

This is the year I became convinced that global warming is real and maybe even stoppable. The main problem of course is that we who are the main cause benefit from the actions that cause it. and so are in a state of denial. The world’s have-nots however are getting restless.
Meanwhile back in the 30″s, on the farm, we learned that science, education, and a little luck can overcome fear and superstition.
